King Saul liked the occult. We can see that carried out in Scripture. It ended up his doom.
God ministered to Saul through the prophet Samuel in his early days to let him know that He can accurately predict the future. Anything that the psychics could do, God showed Saul that He could do better. Saul had a lot of good attributes going for him. He was tall and good-looking, intelligent, from the right family, and had strategic abilities in leadership and war.
The word “goodly” means “good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, fair, with favour, fine, gracious, joyful, kindly, with kindness, likable, loving, merry, most pleasant, pleasing, pleasureable, precious, prosperous, ready, sweet, of wealth, of welfare, and well favoured.” Wow! What a resume! But Saul missed God’s plan. You can’t say that Saul was deceived because he not only had Spiritual experiences but he also had accesses to Spiritual meetings.
They traveled on and God pointed Saul out to Samuel. They spoke “and Samuel answered Saul and said, "I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and tomorrow I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart. But as for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not be anxious about them, for they have been found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you and on all your father's house?" (Verses 19-20) Through Samuel, God confirmed to Saul what was in his heart, the problem, the solution and the plan. God took a moment in time to reveal Himself to Saul in this way. And so that the glory might not be all upon one servant, Samuel also prophesied that Saul would meet a company of prophets and that the Spirit Himself would come upon Saul and that he would be changed into another man. And Samuel said to Saul, “And let it be, when these signs come to you, that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you.” It needs to be pointed out here, with emphasis, that Saul was not to live from one prophetic word to the next, being told what to do, but that he should “do as the occasion demands” since he should know what right and wrong is. Let me strongly say that God, being Omnipotent in power, has given man the freedom and ability, in His Spirit, to make personal choices. It has never been God’s intention to make robots out of people or puppets. If God wanted to do that, I suppose He could have, but if you know the Word, you know that is not God’s design for mankind. God created man for His Pleasure, to love Him in relationship. And if God had never given man that choice, then the act of love between God and mankind could never take place. God created man in His image, for His pleasure, for fellowship. Anything else demeans God’s purpose and plan for His precious creation. God even sent His Son as a man to emphasize and relate to man how special that relationship is. There is a realm in the spirit that can “see” things--events, situations, circumstances and people’s personalities. This is a realm in the spirit world where angels can see. Angels were created to be ministering spirits to God’s creation. As we know, Satan is a fallen arch angel who now leads a host of a third of the angels who fell with him. Instead of ministering Light and Life, they minister evil, darkness, fear, death, destruction and corruption. Because of their past experiences, they remember from whence they came, for the Scripture says in Ezekiel 28:15, 17: “You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you....Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.” There are two ways to tap into the spirit realm--God’s way or Satan’s way. Since Satan once walked in God’s Presence and Light, he knows how to come off as an angel of light. People need to understand that walking in righteousness frees you from the bondage of spiritual oppression. It does not mean that Satan won’t attack you with his evil spirits and presence, but you will not be locked into bondage if you know the truth. But let me also say that even Satan knows the truth but has rejected it and this is what seals his doom. God met Saul where he was as a gifted insightful seeking man. Saul experienced the Presence of God in such a way that it changed him into another man. Saul could have chosen to stay in this Presence and walked his life out as a changed man, but he did not embrace the Truth, he rejected it. He liked the gifts, but did not like the Person and ended up seeking the dark underworld realm in an attempt to reach the heavenlies, but it was the wrong way and led to his destruction. Today in the Church there are many meetings that focus on personal prophecy. Some people are very gifted at having a current word for the believer. The word of prophecy is a gift for the Body of Christ today. It is one of the revelational gifts. But the gifts MUST be in balance with the other gifts and none of the gifts are meant to heavily overshadow the others in a Christian’s life. Otherwise, you will be an unbalanced Christian and you will topple. There are some who have found that people will pay big money for a word of hope. They have hung around long enough to get the “proper lingo” and line them up and say all kinds of things that end people up in confusion. When words do not come to pass or the wrong words are believed, a crippling or even destruction can take place. God does not want that to happen!!! I remember one time someone prophesied to me that I was going to marry a man named Mark. I didn’t know any Mark’s so of course my ears perked up at every mention of that name. The Holy Spirit came and spoke to me Psalm 37:37: “Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; For the future of that man is peace.” The Holy Spirit told me that was my “Mark.” The other was a deceiving spirit. I could have spent my life looking for the right “Mark,” ending up a wreck. God gives people choice. God could no doubt read “my mail,” but for Him to do that would defeat His purpose. Words from the Lord are to encourage you in your walk with Him. A psychic spirit often points you to evil. It starts off nice but then evil things show up. A psychic spirit will lock you into things and not give you the freedom to serve God by choice, it is “destiny” and “fate,” for as you turn away from God for “words” that are not of Him, His Spirit departs.
How do you say you are a Christian and go to church and still “approve those who do such things”? By keeping company with them because what they say tickles your ears. Having a desire to be independent from God, they pursue these things and hang around vile company, all the while professing their Christianity, yet God has turned them over to a debased mind and everything goes wrong in their lives. When you refuse to make right decisions of your own accord, you will become weak minded, and you will go searching for help but God will not answer because you are not really seeking Him and His way. So you will get half truths and end up in all kinds of messes because “you believed” and you will even hear right words the wrong way. One prophetic friend of mine says when people come up to her and ask, “Do you have a word for me from the Lord?” she says, “Yes, God says to go read your Bible!” Of course they get mad over that one, and she prophesies for free, but if they pay enough, they will be able to find someone who will give them “a word.” But it won’t prosper them. God WILL give words to help you in your walk, and it’s not wrong to seek for that purpose but God knows your heart. If you go from “word” to “word” you will never be strong in the Lord because God never meant for you to be so weak! You might be amazed (as I was) to find that the more I sought God and pressed in toward Him, not looking to my own understanding but His, the more “words” come to me! When I quit looking for “words” and went looking for God (because the words didn’t satisfy), “words” came to me and now I must discern if those words are right or not. Some are, some aren’t, and that’s another message. But when I would need help, a “word” often comes through to make me a better and stronger Christian. May it be so for you. SEEK God.
